The End of Desperate Housewives

I watched the finale a couple of days ago, and I’ve been thinking about the impact the show has really had in my life.  The reason I thought the show was so brilliant was the fact that they were always able to up hold the utopian view of the suburbs while still creating the drama we can all relate to.  Sure the show sometimes had its obviously over the top incidences, but it told a very good story around the basic notion that everyone has secrets.

No matter how well we think we know our friends, families, neighbors, etc, we will never know everything there is to know.  You could even say that secrets are what keep us together.  It sure was the case in Desperate Housewives.  Secrets are a two edged sword.  They forge a bond, but can also break one.  Yet, another interesting concept.

Lastly, the show was really good at illustrating the fact that secrets always have a way of getting out.  For better or for worse, why keep secrets?  Then again, is it possible to not have secrets?

Even the most desperate life is oh so wonderful. But only a lucky few realize the gift they’ve been given. Most people just go on day after day, trying in vain to keep secrets that will never stay hidden.” - Mary Alice

The Definition of ‘Fake’ and ‘Petty’

fake adj designed to cheat or deceive; not real; counterfeit

This morning, I spent a good amount of time searching what the meaning of this word is according to general consensus.  In the real world, everyone is fake to some extent, but everyone has a different way of expressing their fake-ness as well as evaluating others’ fake-ness.  There really wasn’t a perfect definition that I could find, but I did get 3 major characteristics of someone who I deem as fake:

  1. appearing pleasant to someone one does not look favorably upon
  2. feeling a sense of entitlement in the action of deceit
  3. living in the illusion that one is never fake
Being fake per say isn’t being a fraudulent person.  Sometimes being fake is simply an unspoken compromise.  A way of dealing with a present situation that needs to be addressed later.  On that note, not a lot of people address this situation later and hence we get pettiness.

petty adj mean and ungenerous in small and trifling matters

The word “petty” is another word I spent a good chunk of my morning searching.  Often times, being fake and being petty go hand in hand.  Again, in my search there is no comprehensive definition of what it means to be petty, but this is what I pulled:

  1. addressing something negative about a person for the sole purpose of making them look bad
  2. not addressing a problem at the source
  3. requiring other people to have the same views as you; having double standards
It’s all to frequent that I encounter these things and usually from the same people, which I’m sure is the case for most people.  It’s not fun to listen to, it makes things awkward, and it’s not productive at all, perhaps even detractive.

What are your thoughts?
